We’re still seeing a lot of 990 Adventures and this KTM and owner rode all the way up from Herefordshire for an ECU remap. Generally, they come to us to match fuelling to end-cans and/or sort out the awful on/off snatchy low-rpm throttle response built-in to these engines.

But we always listen to what the owner wants first, take the bike for a quick spin to see what we think and then strap it to the Dyno to see what’s what. A lot of problems aren’t strictly KTM’s fault and are caused by what they had to do to get that motor through emissions regs.

So the first thing we do is get rid of all of it, switching off the lambda then working through the secondary butterfly valves, MAP (Manifold Air Pressure) map, then ignition and fuelling tables. The difference is like night and day and after the ECU remap the 990 feels like the old carb’d 950 version (which was lovely). Below is a typical email response from an Adventure owner after some time spent with us…

A long way from home, but worth the trip to sort out this Adventure's throttle feel and power delivery...

Great, many thanks.

Had a good run back and seems smoother. Also improved around the 3,000rpm mark when I am threading my way through the traffic. Many thanks and now all set for Barcelona on June!
