BSD has a large engineering shop out back behind the bike workshop – we turn out a lot of specialised pieces for local industry as well, of course, parts for motorcycles.
This is a Haas VF4 CNC 4-axis milling machine which we installed a week or so ago. It expands our ability for the general engineering that we do and also helps in our gearbox manufacture (we’re getting asked for more and more complete GSX-R1000 gearboxes, mainly for car use where they get a proper hammering in ways they weren’t designed for).
We build and tune a lot of GSX-R engines for the car boys and the stock gearbox is a weak link. Now we can machine the dogs with a better undercut to survive the odd missed shift and smooth out the gear change itself. We can also make our own gears out of a much higher quality base material (not super-finished, which we’re not sure about…) with our own finish and the end result will be a faster, more positive shift with extended reliability. We’ll also in time be able to put a cylinder head on a rotary table and port it.
Just don’t ask how much it cost…!
