The MT-03 is a curious little bike based around Yamaha’s venerable 45bhp 660 motor – very much a cheap starter tool but not bad because of it. The lad who owns this one is very switched on and had tried to sort his bike out with an 02 Eliminator bought from Australia, which was supposed to ‘reset’ the fuelling in the closed loop area.
We had to disconnect it while sorting the PC V because it was making the engine run like a bag of spanners. It’s OK trying to fool the ECU but the signal that actually gets transmitted (supposedly from the lambda) does sometimes get scrambled, and the fuelling can change second by second – the same throttle position run on the Dyno will get different results every time.
So we remapped it – and while it didn’t make any more power we filled in all the gaping holes in the delivery and it felt nice and sharp out on the road. We were pleased!
