This is the second R1M we’ve ECU remapped. And in truth we’ve had to make a radical change because they are a horrible, snatchy bad tempered thing low down.

This one was fitted with a Yamaha-spec Akrapovic exhaust system that had made it run even more poorly – so the owner brought it to us. His words when he delivered it were; “If you don’t fix it, it’s going back to the dealer where it can stay…”

Obviously he’d paid a lot of money for it and was not happy. He’d been told that the pipe would need no adjustments anywhere on the engine when fitted, but his bike ran shockingly.

We got it on the Dyno. We’d already looked at PB’s one and come to the conclusion that it needed a lot of work from a mapping perspective. Now, with the experience of spending time on this R1M we have come up with a solution to the problem. And it did involve shutting the Dyno room door for a long time, and a lot of head scratching… The owner was taking it to Portimao for some track time, so we’ll be interested to hear what he reckons.

The rider of the PB machine reckons his is now mint after a visit to our workshop, and can’t believe the difference. In truth, this is not a straightforward bike to deal with (unsurprisingly) but we feel now that we have a handle on its intricacies – and can dramatically improve it over stock.

A tricky beast stock. Even worse with a pipe fitted. But now we know how to make the R1M work...
