This Hypermotard finished up with 80-odd horsepower, but when it came in it was running massively lean everywhere – to the point we were struggling to get it on par. The lambdas had been done away with via the Zard exhaust, so we switched ’em off in the software but it was still lean…

The owner had also had an airbox mod (extra holes) done but in truth the engine felt nasty; sharp on the throttle, with limited control and didn’t feel happy anywhere. So we gave it the correct air/fuel ratio – trimmed neatly for both cylinders – which brought it into line across the rev-range. The lesson? Be careful what you do to an engine like this… and whatever you do get your ECU remapped!
