Sometimes people come to us with very specific requirements for certain needs, and as we’ve got a very fancy engineering shop out back, staffed by clever blokes we like to put it to good use. This customer loves his bikes, but only has the use of one hand (all of his controls were on the right bar) and was struggling to stop his Suzuki X7 on its standard (weedy) brakes. He’d sourced some uprated forks and needed a pair of Brembo calipers marrying to ‘em.
Our job was to make some caliper brackets – an easy job you might think. But there’s an awful lot to consider; obviously, they have to be strong enough so good material’s required, and our base line is HE30 aircraft quality aluminium. From there it gets more complicated – the design of the bracket can’t use sharp corners or edges (which is hard when you’re making calipers match different discs and forks) and therefore needs lots of radiuses to stop cracking and fractures. All in all, a great deal of thinking time for what is a small piece of engineering!
