Look closely at the picture below; this is a late model R1 engine that suffered a low-speed (just out of the driveway) spill. What should’ve been a cheap, if annoying tip-off turned into an expensive nightmare – because the ‘crash bung’ fitted on a mounting plate punched a neat crack into the cylinder head. We pulled the engine, sourced a new head and, while it was apart, blessed it with more horsepower.
The moral of this story is simple; be sure any crash bung you fit is not merely a cosmetic addition. It’ll do more harm than good…
