RD500LCs are something special – and now very rare. Spares support from Yamaha is patchy and – while it’s a small piece – the water pump gear is a vital part of the engine, and mostly unobtainable.
Which is why BSD Engineering produce them. This is reverse engineering or, re-manaufacturing of an existing part. So we started with an original Yamaha item, measured by CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) in every detail down to the finest micron in order to build a 3D computer map. Prototyping and proving the part is key, and once fully confident with every aspect of design and performance we could get on and make some!
Manufactured from tough EN8 steel the first step in its creation is a trip to the Lathe, which creates the basic disc diameter and bosses on either side. Next is the Gear Cutting machine (to slot the teeth in) then Broaching, which adds the slotted keyways. Final part of the job is a hand de-burr to clean up any sharp edges.
