This SMT really was heavy on fuel and spitting flames from its exhausts… And this is something else that’s become more obvious recently – when KTM dealers are servicing these bikes they’re just dumping factory maps in. Not because they should, it seems, but because they can.

That map may  well have been good for one bike, at the factory, but not for all. It’s sort of a one size fits nobody situation and the net result is bikes running badly.

Which is what we think happened to this particular KTM. It was running horrendously rich and we had to lean it right out. Very strange. We checked the Manifold Air Pressure sensor and map to make sure it was working OK and it was – the fuelling map was simply flooding the engine with fuel.

The map on this KTM was putting too much fuel in – ridiculous amounts in fact.
