The owner of this SMT had had his bike from new; he’d had an 950SM previously and in his own words “it was an amazing bike and I had no issues with it at all. I stepped up to the 990 and because I bought it I’ve stuck with it and lived with it… I’m no internet freak but somebody mentioned they’d seen the BSD website and that you could fix these things – now I’m not daft but not sure about any of this!”

Fair shout. So we went through and explained everything before we started. We also explained it is a big V-twin with a 72° V angle so is what it is… we could make it a lot nicer, but not change it completely. So we did the remap – emissions, ignition, secondary butterflies and fuelling. The engine then felt smooth and usable on the roadtest, so we got the owner into the Dyno room and showed him exactly what we’d done, and why.

A disappointed ex-950SM owner has lived with his 'digital' 990 SMT for long enough – an ECU remap has made it much more analogue.
