There are companies out there offering to build a map for your Yamaha ECU. We’ve looked into all the software that’s available at the moment for Yamahas, we’ve worked with them and right now don’t feel they’re good enough. We do have something coming that will do the job perfectly to our specification, so watch this space…

So, right now when the owner of this V-Max rolled up (he’d got a great deal, bought it from its first owner with 400 miles on the clock) a Power Commander PC V was the only option we decided on to sort his fuelling. Being a handy sort of bloke – and unhappy with the washing machine sound it made – he’d gutted and de-catted the stock cans and fitted a Y-piece in the exhaust, but knew that opening out the back pressure had left the motor wanting.

The lambdas were out of play so we then sorted the secondary air system and mapped the engine to its free-breathing state on the Dyno with a PC V. The result was 195bhp at the rear wheel with torque that would aid elephant birth. Twins. On the test ride it rode like a big pussycat, lovely.

It may have the torque to tow an ocean liner but the big Max is a sweetheart really...
